Department of archeology together with the numismatic collection originated from the 1885 decision of the town authorities on founding the town museum. This was at first executed by putting up some sort of lapidary in the town’s only park. Some of these stone monuments can be seen in the park even today.
History of Sirmium and its popularization owes a great deal to the Sremska Mitrovica’s most famous archaeologist, late doctor of archaeology Petar Milosevic.
