Collecting, treatment and presentation of different objects connected with urban, social, military, political, economic and cultural past of Sremska Mitrovica and smaller towns in Srem are the main activities of the department of history. This past is narrowed to the period of Turkish reign of the 16th and 17th centuries, Austro-Hungarian period from the 18th until the 20th century and modern history of Yugoslavia during the period 1918-1945.

By their character and practical value, museum objects are classified into following collections:

Collection of the documents is the largest in number and comprises of charters, orders, diplomas, written material of different contents, memorials, graphic maps, plans of buildings and places, lithography, rare books and documents from the 2nd World War.

Collection of the weapons comprises of cold arms (swords, daggers, yataghans, axes and spears), firearms (riffles, pistols, revolvers) and of artillery armament.

Collection of the photographs comprises of kalotipies and photographs of various nature, as the portrait, middleclass – documentary, historical-documentary and applied photographs in print (postcards).

Collection of the cultural and historical objects comprises of a different material: ceramic vessels from a Turkish period, objects of the middle-class culture of the 18th and especially of the 19th century as flags, ribbons, instruments, clocks, personal belongings of the well-known town inhabitants, cups, stamps, jewellery, and orders.

Numismatic collection comprises of the middle ages Hungarian, Frisian, English, Dubrovnik’s, Venetian, Serbian and Turkish coins; then the Austrian and Hungarian coins and the money of certain European states from the 17th until the beginning of the 20th century, and also national money from 1918 onwards.

Collection of the newsprints comprises of daily and periodical prints for the trade, amusement, culture and politics starting from the second part of the 19th century.
