Department of natural history in the Museum of Srem developed from a private collection of the eng. Dusan Ostojic. His collection was donated to the Museum of Srem in 1947. (More information on quantity and type of material was not given). In later years more objects were acquired for the Museum, although not systematically and up until 1993 there was not anyone employed, not even temporarily, to work on new material. Our collection of natural history keeps exceptionally important paleontological and archeolozoological material. At the present we are in the process of creating a mineralogy and petrology collection. PALEONTOLOGICAL COLLECTION Fossil remains of the Pleistocene mammals Fossils of proboscides species Mammuthus primigenius (Blumenbach) and Mammuthus trogontherii Pohlig are represented with the parts of jaws, individual teeth and the bones of extra cranial skeleton like vertebras, parts of the shoulder and pelvis zones, as well as long bones of the extremities. The mandible of the species Coelodonta antiquitatis (Blumenbach), as well as two fragments of Dicerorhinus sp are the remains of the Pleistocene rinoceratides. Two species of cervides Megaloceros giganteus (Blumenbach) and Alces alces Linne., as well as two species of bovidian fossils Bison priscus Bojanus and Bos primigenius Bojanus are represented with the skulls with fragments of antlers and individual antlers. All the above mentioned fragments were found in the bed of the river Sava or in the alluvial layers Miocene fauna Numerous representatives of classes of BIVALVIA, GASTROPADA, SCAPHOPODA, ECHINOIDEA, as well as the class of ANTHOZOA, point to the variety of fauna in the time of Miocene which existed on the territory of north-eastern slopes of the mountain Fruska gora. ARCHEOZOOLOGICAL COLLECTION Comprises of the extensive osteological material from antique and middle ages, collected during the systematic archaeological excavations of Sirmium (1994 -2001). MINERALOGY AND PETROGRAPHY COLLECTION This part of the collection is at the time in forming. For the moment there are only rocks and minerals collected on the terrain of the Fruska gora. Department is held by Dragana Nedeljković, curator. Contact tel: +381 (22) 621-150 |
