Our Antique and Byzantine numismatic collection was formed as part of the Department of Archaeology. A great number of the pieces (over 30,000) and their significance have required a special treatment and for this reason the collection was separated as an independent unit in 1977. Collection of the Antique and Byzantine coins was formed in 1948 with not so important or numerous acquisitions up until 1952 and the accidental discovery of the great hoard of the Roman coins from Bikic do, which becomes a nucleus, first of all of a antique numismatic collection. Majority of the coins are from the times of the Roman Empire between 1st and 4th century A.D. This is understandable because they originate from the territory of Sirmium and Roman sites in Srem and were made mainly of the bronze and copper, except of a hundred silver examples and 34 gold coins. Coins found during the archaeological research and excavations of Sirmium are of the exceptional importance. Fifteen hoards as well as one collective find of six siliquas from the 4th century are of the great value. Of all the hoards the most important is, now famous in the whole world, a hoard of 33 examples of golden coinage with four coins of Constantinus the Great which are the world rarities. The hoards are mainly from the 4th century, except the one hoard from the 1st till 3rd century and two from the 3rd century. By accident in 1987 a big hoard of Roman coins from the 4th century at Nova Pazova was found with over 6,000 examples. The oldest coins in our collection are from the pre-Roman times: dozens of examples of Greek, Celtic and Republic silver coins. The youngest ones are a hundred pieces of the Byzantine and few of a barbarian coinage. The collection is under supervision of a numismatic curator, Pavle Popović. Contact tel: +381 (22) 623-245 |
