Welcome to the information site of the Museum of Srem. Our Museum is situated in Sremska Mitrovica that developed on the rich remains of Roman town called Sirmium, called by antique writers a multipopulated and glorious town, which secured a permanent place in the history of the mankind. SIRMIVM …… VRBS POPULOSA ET CELEBRIS ’, by Ammianus Marcellinus, 4th century AD Our town commenced its life some 7ooo years ago on the swampy banks of the river Sava, when members of the Starcevo cultural group were first to establish a small settlement, creating in that way a nucleus for the future Sremska Mitrovica. Romans came to our town at the end of the 1st century BC and very early, during the reign of the Flavian dynasty (69-96 AD) town gained a status of one colony, the highest rank that it could have in the Roman Empire. A full glory of Sirmium can the best be seen from the ruins of the 4th century AD, when its numerous inhabitants of Roman, Illyrian and Celtic origin, as well as the incomers from all parts of the huge Roman Empire, enjoyed the privileges of living in such a extraordinary town that was a birthplace for six Roman emperors. Remains of the Emperor’s Palace, Hippodrome, public baths, paved streets, organized water supply and sewege systems, then systems of central heating show only a fragment of the luxury that was on disposal of its inhabitants. In early Christian times town was also a significant centre. There are still visible remains of the church consecrated to St Demetrius, one of two hundred martyrs of our town, who later gave his name to the today’s Sremska Mitrovica. We invite you to visit our site and town and help us keep and save its rich history. |
